Former President George W. Bush led the tributes to Kissinger.
In a statement released through his foundation, he said America has "lost one of its most trusted and distinctive voices on foreign affairs."
"I have long admired the man who ran from the Nazis as a young man from a Jewish family, and then fought them in the United States Army.
"When he later became Secretary of State, his appointment as a former refugee said as much about his greatness as it did about the greatness of America.
"He has worked in the administrations of two presidents and advised many others. I am grateful for that service and advice, but I am most grateful for his friendship."
Bush said he and his wife would miss Kissinger's wisdom, charm and humor.
