European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was asked if she could set a timeline for when exactly Ukraine could be allowed to join the EU.
During the press conference from the EU Summit on the third anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, she said that the process for membership is "merit-based" and the union should be beneficial for both the applicant country and the EU.
She explains that the EU is hesitant to give an exact date for when Ukraine could join, as this could mean that other applicant countries are also seeking such a thing.
Von der Leyen adds that Ukraine is doing well and could be "admitted earlier than 2030" if the country continues "at that speed and with that quality."
