Vučić's accusations of European-funded protests, EP rapporteur for Serbia

The European Parliament's rapporteur for Serbia, Tonino Picula, stated today in Belgrade that Serbia must seriously demonstrate that it is strategically oriented towards the European Union and communicate objectively and clearly about the EU.

The Ministry for European Integration reported that Picula said in a meeting with Serbian Minister Tanja Miscevic that "major shortcomings still exist in critical areas, such as the rule of law, media freedom, the electoral framework, the continued prevalence of corruption in many areas, and public administration reform."

Picula condemned unfounded accusations against the EU and its member states that they are involved in organizing the current student-led protests in Serbia.

The EP rapporteur for Serbia expressed the EP's readiness to support the resumption of political and democratic processes related to Serbia's European path, using existing tools and initiatives to support democracy.

Miscevic stressed that European integration is a key priority of Serbia's foreign policy and that Serbia is ready to benefit from the new momentum of enlargement by fulfilling its membership obligations.

She stressed the importance of the Growth Plan and the Reform Agenda, which list priority measures to accelerate the process.

Picula and Miščević discussed his draft Report on Serbia, which is in the process of being adopted by the EP.

Picula, who will visit Serbia until Wednesday, today met with the Deputy Speaker of the Serbian Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for European Integration, Elvira Kovač, and will also meet with other representatives of the government, opposition, media and the non-governmental sector.
