European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the European Union will not consider lifting sanctions on Iran without a clear and verifiable change in the behavior of the Iranian authorities.
During a press conference ahead of the G7 summit in France, Von der Leyen stressed that the punitive measures imposed on Tehran are aimed at inciting concrete changes in Iran's policies.
"The principle of sanctions is clear: a real change in practice is needed before one can think about lifting them," declared the European Commission president.
She added that only a credible and verifiable change in Iran's actions could create the conditions for the easing or lifting of sanctions by the European Union.
"If Iran's behavior changes in a credible and verifiable way, then the way could be opened for the easing or lifting of sanctions," Von der Leyen said.
The President of the European Commission also reiterated the long-held position of the United States, according to which there will be no transfer of funds nor lifting of sanctions without the fulfillment of the conditions set by the international community.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reports that around $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets must be released before detailed talks between the US and Iran can begin on reaching a comprehensive peace agreement.
Von der Leyen's statements come at a time when diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions with Iran remain the focus of international discussions.
