A 26-year-old Italian with an American passport has been arrested by the police in the USA, after being accused of being the author of the murder of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, which happened last week in New York City.
Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 450 km west of New York City after a customer recognized him.
When the 26-year-old was placed in handcuffs, a gun and a handwritten document were found.
Luigi Mangione appeared in a Pennsylvania court where he was charged with five counts and denied bail.
Dressed in jeans and a dark blue T-shirt, Mangione appeared relaxed during the hearing, occasionally glancing at those in attendance, including the media.
Just hours later, New York investigators charged Mangione with murder and four other charges, including the firearms charge.
Thompson, 50, was fatally shot in the back last Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where UnitedHealthcare, the insurance giant he ran, was holding an investor meeting.
Police say he was the target of a premeditated murder.
Investigators said finding Mangione was a complete surprise, as they did not have his name on the suspect list.
It was a McDonald's customer in Altoona who recognized the suspect because of photos published in the media and notified an employee, who then informed the police.
When police arrived, Luigi Mangione showed them a fake New Jersey driver's license in the name Mark Rosario, court documents state.
He became silent and began to shake when an officer asked him if he had been to New York recently. When told he would be arrested if he lied, he gave his real name, according to court documents.
Asked why he lied, he told officers "I shouldn't have." During the search, a gun and a magazine filled with six rounds of 9 mm ammunition were found in his backpack.
Prosecutors said he also carried a US passport and $10,000 in cash.
