Despite Vučić announcing that he will run for the post of Prime Minister of Serbia, it is currently unclear who the candidate for President of Serbia will be...
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić will not run for president in the upcoming elections. Vučić stated that the Serbian Constitution will not be amended to allow him to serve a third term and that he will be a candidate for prime minister in the upcoming elections.
"I will not change the Constitution to be president for the third time, everything will be according to the law... I do not want this to be a burden either for the party I want, the Serbian Progressive Party, in power, or for the Movement for the People and the State that will break out at the beginning of next year ," Vučić said.
Recall that the Constitution of Serbia stipulates that no one can be elected President more than twice. This means that a person can only serve two presidential terms, regardless of how long the first and second terms last. To run for a third term as president, the Constitution would have to be amended to remove or change the two-term limit, which has been denied by the Serbian president.
Despite having announced that he will run for the post of Prime Minister of Serbia, it is currently unclear who the Progressive Party (SNS) candidate for President of Serbia will be.
The Serbian Progressive Party does not have a charismatic person who would independently win the presidential elections, and this is why Vučić aims for the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on the same day.
The Serbian Progressive Party does not know who Vučić's presidential favorite is either. They emphasize that this has not been discussed at party meetings, but that it has been mentioned behind the scenes that the current president's desire is for a woman to succeed him in that position, just as Ana Brnabić once succeeded him as prime minister.
When asked if there is already a name in circulation, members from the SNS respond that the president is the one who takes care of everything.
Bojan Pajtic, a university professor, is convinced that the candidate for president of Serbia will not be chosen from among prominent progressives, but will be someone who will act as a front for a criminal organization, known as the Serbian Progressive Party.
Aleksandar Ivković, a political scientist and associate at the Center for Contemporary Politics, also believes that when choosing a presidential candidate, the SNS will be guided by the logic of not nominating someone who is simply a party figure, but will try to find someone outside the party, or someone who is not closely connected to the SNS.
When can elections be held in Serbia?
The Law on the Election of the President of Serbia stipulates that the President of Serbia is elected for a five-year term and that elections for the President of Serbia are announced 90 days before the end of the term, and that they must be completed within 60 days from the date of the announcement of the elections. Vučić's second term began on 31 May 2022, which means that the next presidential elections will have to be announced no later than the end of February 2027, or in that case held no later than the end of April of that year./ Pamphlet
