Israel's secret services are ready to kill Hamas leaders wherever they are when the war in the Gaza Strip ends, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
The order, according to the publication, was given by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Based on this, Israeli intelligence officials are considering how to kill Hamas leaders based in Lebanon, Turkey and Qatar.
As noted, this plan "will be a second chance for Netanyahu, who in 1997 ordered the poisoning of Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Jordan. However, this operation not only did not succeed, but instead led to the release of the leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin."
It was Netanyahu himself who revealed his intentions in a speech on November 22, when he said he had ordered the Mossad to act against Hamas leaders wherever they are.
Officials quoted by the SJ said that Israel is already considering either arresting or executing Hamas leaders in Gaza, and the question now for the Israelis is not whether they will try to kill Hamas leaders elsewhere in the world, but where and how.
Netanyahu's targeting has already sparked controversy within Israel, with former Mossad director Ephraim Halevi saying it was the wrong choice.
According to him, killing the leaders of Hamas will not eliminate the threat, but instead has the potential to increase the number of supporters of the terrorist organization and accelerate even worse threats.
