Yulia Navalnaya in her husband's footsteps, calls Russians to protest on

Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has called on the Russian people to protest on March 17, election day.

In a YouTube video, Navalnaya said she took more hope from the huge crowds that turned out last week for the funeral of her husband, who died in an Arctic penal colony on February 16, and that, since they covered his grave in a 'sea' of flowers.
She called on people to join the March 17 action that Navalny, Russia's most popular opposition figure, had called before he died.

His idea was that by people holding a mass protest in cities across the country, there would be no risk of arrest.

"We must use election day to show that we exist and there are many of us. We are real, living people and we are against Putin. You must come to the polling station on the same day and at the same time. March 17 at noon," said Yulia Navalnaya.

"What to do next? The choice is yours. You can vote for any candidate but Putin. You can tear up the ballot, you can write 'Navalny' in big letters on it. You can even just come and stay at the polling station, and then turn around and go home," she continues.

Since her husband's death, Navalnaya has vowed to continue his work and has made several high-profile political appearances in the West, including meeting US President Joe Biden, as well as speaking at the Munich Security Conference and European Parliament.

The Kremlin has strongly denied Navalny's accusations that Putin killed Navalny and has declined to comment on the public reaction to his death and funeral. His death certificate states that he died of natural causes at the age of 47. / Reuters
