US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on Hamas to accept an immediate ceasefire with Israel, as the situation in Gaza is critical.
He says that the release of the hostages can be followed by a lasting solution. Blinken stresses that it is also urgent to increase humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza.
"There is an opportunity for an immediate ceasefire that could bring the hostages home, that could dramatically increase the amount of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians who need it, and then set the conditions for a lasting settlement.
"It is up to Hamas to decide whether it is prepared to engage in a ceasefire. It is also urgent to increase the humanitarian aid it is giving to people inside Gaza. Israel must maximize every possible means, every possible method to provide aid to people in need. We will continue to put pressure on him every day because the situation in this state is simply unacceptable" , said Blinken during a visit by the Prime Minister of Qatar to Washington.
