
Some 147 migrants and refugees landed on the small Sicilian island of Lampedusa in four separate boats on Monday, the first arrivals of 2024.
After transferring 650 people off the island, on Tuesday morning there were 352 people in the temporary reception of immigrants.
On orders from the Agrigento prefecture, 300 people were scheduled to be transferred by passenger ferry to Porto Empedocle on mainland Sicily later in the day, according to ANSA.
On Saturday, the interior ministry said 155,754 migrants landed in Italy in 2023, including more than 17,000 unaccompanied foreign minors.
This represents a 50% increase compared to the previous year, when there were 103,846 arrivals.
