Zelensky called the attack on Christmas Day inhumane, Moscow reacts: It was a

Yesterday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia made a "conscious choice" by launching a major overnight attack on his country's energy infrastructure on Christmas Day.

He called them "inhumane" and said that efforts are being made to restore power as soon as possible.

"Russian evil will not break Ukraine," he added.

Ukraine's air force said it had detected 184 missiles and drones, but many of them shot down or missed their targets.

On the other hand, Moscow confirmed the attack and claimed that its goal had been achieved. Russian defense confirmed that its forces had carried out a "massive attack" on "critical" energy facilities in Ukraine, adding that the attack was a success and all targets were hit. The attack led to power outages across the country, including in the capital Kiev, where some residents took shelter in subway stations.

"This was the 13th major attack on Ukraine's energy sector this year," said the country's largest private energy company, DTEK.

This is the second time that Ukraine celebrates Christmas Day on December 25. It traditionally followed the Julian calendar, like Russia, where Christmas falls on January 7.
