Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday he had proposed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G7 summit taking place this week in France, with the aim of discussing possibilities for ending the four-year war.
Speaking from a historic monastery in Kiev, damaged by Russian air strikes overnight, Zelensky said the initiative had received principled support from both the United States and European partners.
"We gave the message that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7, because that is where Trump and Macron are, so Europe and America together," he said, referring to US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.
According to the Ukrainian head of state, despite diplomatic efforts, Moscow refused to engage in such a meeting.
"Europe and the United States agreed, but Russia has shown again that it is not ready to talk," he said.
A Ukrainian official announced that the proposal had been forwarded to American and French representatives, and had also been communicated directly with the Russian side, without receiving a clear response.
Zelensky had publicly made the same invitation earlier this month, but Russian authorities had stated that they saw no reason to hold a meeting between the two presidents.
