Fires in Greece. catastrophic situation in Evia; several villages are evacuated

Greece continues the battle with the fires in Evia, Evros, Alexandroupoli and other areas. A 20-year-old arsonist confessed to the police that he had started a fire with a lighter because he likes to see firefighters putting out flames. On the other hand, the area of Trikalla was invaded by a tornado that destroyed 3 villages.

The evidence of an arsonist uncovered by the Greek media has caught the attention of the local public, when he showed the reasons why there were fires.

He told the police that he started the fire in the Karistos area in Evia on August 24 with a lighter, because he liked to see the firefighters "running to put out the flames". The 20-year-old, already in Avlona's cells, is just one of hundreds of others arrested for intentional arson.

The Greek authorities continue to fight the flames and are focused on Evro, where the fires have gotten out of control.

There are continuous explosions in the forest of Dadia, where the battle of Firefighters continues for the ninth day. Residents in Avra, Plakë, Atarni and Kassitera received evacuation messages from 112 yesterday. Evros was visited by the Minister of Civil Defense, Vasilis Kikilias, who is monitoring the fire extinguishing work on the ground.

The deputy governor of Evros, Dimitris Petrovich, speaking to ERT, stated that the situation is extremely difficult and has destroyed everything.

The forecast is not promising at all as from Monday the winds will be strong

Meanwhile, the area of Trikalla has been engulfed by a tornado. The hail that lasted 20 to 25 minutes was enough to cause incalculable damage in three villages. The hail has been accompanied by rain and strong winds that have turned the roads into rivers. Residents describe it as a biblical disaster, while the municipality has immediately sent machines to clean the streets.
