Veliaj also purchased and brought from the US a Benz R350, manufactured in 2007, purchased for 12 thousand euros, without paying customs duties.
Evasion of customs duty is not an illegal activity by Veliaj, as Article 17 of the law on the status of MPs provides that a MP is allowed to avoid paying customs duty on work equipment related to his activity as a MP only in one case during his mandate.
But, what is striking is the fact that most MPs have used this privilege to bring expensive cars from Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, England, Serbia, Bulgaria, France, the USA, Canada, etc.
In February 2018, DP MP Eduard Halimi resigned from his parliamentary mandate for unclear reasons.
Instead of Halim, he entered the Parliament and took the mandate of MP Astrit Veliaj.
In this context, Astrit Veliaj has declared to the HIDAKCI all the assets he possessed and the justifying sources.
It turns out that Astrit Veliaj has cheated with his asset declaration, hiding the value and how he became the owner of a Land Rover car worth over 140 million old lekë in Albania.
Contrary to what the customs documents indicate, Astrit Veliaj declares that on May 23, 2017, he benefited from the exchange of the luxury Land Rover car with a 2014 Range Rover.
He made the exchange with Edmond Shahini's company Mektrin Motors shpk, paying 61 thousand euros as a difference.
So, the car he bought in Germany for 111 thousand euros, Astrit Veliaj declares to the HIDAKKI for 61 thousand euros.
Meanwhile, the Benz car, which Veliaj bought in the US for 12 thousand euros, is not declared at the HIDAKKI.
These facts that emerge from the comparison of documents create reasonable suspicion that Astrit Veliaj has committed the criminal offenses of concealing assets and money laundering.

Në maj të vitit 2022, ish deputeti i Partisë Demokratike, Astrit Veliaj, teksa deklaroi largimin nga politika, u shpreh se: ‘nuk ka si gjumi mbas punëve të ngritura me pastërti‘.
Pas përbetimeve të Astrit Veliajt për ndershmëri, pastërti dhe punë me djersë, ka dyshime të forta se mund të fshihet një nga historitë më epike të korrupsionit dhe pastrimit të parave, miksimit të politikës me biznesmenë të dyshimtë, fshehjes së pasurive të politikanë të korruptuar përmes biznesmenëve, kartelit të interesave, kamuflimit dhe zhvatjes.
Dosjet e para të korrupsionit të SPAK po tregojnë se funksionarë dhe ish funksionarë publikë, politikanë dhe familjarët e tyre kanë fshehur interesat, aksionet dhe pasuritë në emër të disa biznesmenëve të besuar, të cilëve u kanë dhënë para dhe pasuri publike kishin ishin në poste drejtuese (ministra apo drejtorë), ose favore të ndryshme si leje, licenca, fshirje taksash etj.

Edhe pse ka qenë mekanik përpara vitit 1990, ai u bë një biznesmen i suksesshëm në tregti dhe shërbime (1990¬1995) dhe ndërtues (1995-2000).
