The poor in Albania have the greatest inability in Europe to provide enough food

In 2022, around 8.3% of the EU population could not afford a meal containing meat, fish or a vegetarian equivalent once every two days, one percentage point (pp) higher than in 2021 (7.3%).

While 19.7% of people at risk of poverty were unable to have such a meal.

For Albania, the data belong to the year 2021, but they are among the highest in Europe, reflecting the impossibility to buy and prepare the right food.

According to Eurostat, 67.9% of people at risk of poverty in Albania, in 2021, were unable to afford a meal containing meat, fish or vegetarian equivalent once every two days, three times higher than the European average.

This figure is the highest in Europe, while the data for Kosovo are not reported. After us comes Turkey, with 62.9%, North Macedonia 54.8%, Bulgaria 44.9%, Serbia 37%.

It is not only the poor who find it impossible to provide a sufficient meal. 34.3% of the Albanian population could not afford a meal containing meat, fish or vegetarian equivalent once every two days (from 8.3% which is the European average). In this indicator, Albania ranks third highest in Europe after Turkey 37.3% and North Macedonia 36.5%.

The inability to provide enough food is mainly related to the low level of income and relatively expensive prices. Although they have the lowest average wages in the region, about 30-40% less than other countries (with the exception of Kosovo), Albanian families and individuals face higher prices for their daily purchases.

In Albania, prices were 61.3% of the European Union average, according to data reported by INSTAT. While in relation to other countries of the region, Albania is the second relatively more expensive, after Serbia, which has an indicator of 62.8%. In Montenegro, prices are 60.4% of the European Union average, in Bosnia-Herzegovina 57.6, while the cheapest in the region is North Macedonia, with 51%.

More expensive than the European average in Albania are dairy (111.7%), oil (106.7), non-alcoholic beverages (108%), household appliances (122%), according to Eurostat. Tobacco is cheaper by 44%./Monitor
