Internal bank transfers in Euro currency are growing strongly this year.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, for the first eight months of this year, a total of more than 154,000 national transfers in Euros were made through the AIPS Euro payment system.
This figure is very close to the total number of actions that were carried out during the entire year 2022, when in a little more than 11 months (it started work on January 24, 2022) AIPS Euro processed a total of 156 thousand domestic transactions in the European currency.
If last year an average of 14,000 national transfers in euros were made every month, for the 8th month of 2023 the average monthly number of transactions has reached more than 19,000.
The increase is also significant in the value of transactions. This year, the average monthly value of transactions has reached almost 319 million euros, from approximately 298 million euros
Among other things, the data of the transfers processed in the AIPS Euro system are an indication of the high level of use of the Euro in internal economic transactions and show the high degree of Euroization of the Albanian economy.
Before the establishment of the AIPS Euro system, national transfers in Euro could only be made through the use of accounts that Albanian banks have in correspondent banks abroad. This route created time delays and, above all, much higher costs compared to Lek transfers. With the new AIPS Euro system, the Bank of Albania also determined ceiling values that commercial banks can charge their customers for commissions.
For initial payments ordered by clients of the participants and transferred through the AIPS Euro system, with a value less than or equal to 10 thousand euros, the total commissions applied by the originating participant for each payment order must not be higher than 0.2% of the transferred value and the commission floor cannot be higher than 6 euros.
In addition to reducing costs, this project is estimated to have brought positive effects from the point of view of the administration of physical money in Euros by banks and the promotion of electronic payments in this segment of the market, encouraging Albanian citizens to use these instruments. In the past, high commissions often caused banking sector clients to move funds from one bank to another through withdrawals and cash transfers.
According to the estimates of the Bank of Albania, the AIPS Euro system saves the Albanian economy approximately 10 million euros per year./ Monitor
