Precisely for this reason, because the socialists are setting up a special commission, manipulating its essence, this attempt has given wings to even the most ominous hypotheses.
Edi Rama is leading his parliamentary majority towards a new battle with windmills. 73 socialist green cards approved a special commission to control the influence of foreign powers on Albanian democracy, or more bluntly, the influence of Russian money on the media, politics or social networks.
The deputies who raised this alarm presented it as an urgent problem. Rama himself published a status where he asked to walk quickly on this road. Speaker Nikola sent a letter to the senior American diplomat, James Rubin, who covers this field in his country, to speak before the assembly on the same issue. While the Top Channel, on whose screen the revivalists infiltrate all the news without a source, announced that the scanner of the newly established commission will pass the online media, for which the secret service has data that are financed in dark ways.
So, in the blink of an eye, out of nowhere, a threat was invented that no one had seen before.
It must be said from the beginning and bluntly that this is a storm in a glass. Nothing we know so far justifies the existence of such a commission. The ruling party claims that it took as a model the special commission and the resolution that the European Parliament approved on this issue.
But the Albanian case and that of Strasbourg differ like night and day. The European MPs found with evidence and facts their colleagues who had maintained direct ties with Moscow.
Thus the Latvian environmentalist, Tatjaa Zdanoka, was revealed by an independent Russian media to be in contact with FSB secret service officers. On the other hand, the Belgian prime minister has spoken about some elected members of the Strasbourg parliament who have questionable ties to the Kremlin.
If you add to these the facts that portals, such as the Czech "Voic of Europe", were financed to make propaganda against Ukraine and to stop the military support to Kiev, the European concern is legitimate.
But Brussels and Strasbourg first saw the clues and then engaged in their own investigation. While in Albania, such are completely absent, if we have enough respect for ourselves not to take seriously the ridiculous schemes of the Rama-Duçka-Neza-McGonigal group.
So we are the opposite of the example we claim to be relying on. We are launching an investigation without any leads.
But this is not the only difference. It is already proven that Russia has launched a disinformation campaign in the West, to divide NATO and EU countries, to discredit the sanctions against it and to reduce military support against Ukrainian troops on the ground. The effects are well known. Berlin and Paris even have former prime ministers paid by the oligarchs next to Putin, not to mention politicians and MPs, especially from populist parties, who call for the abandonment of Kiev.
Does this happen in Albania? It would seem ridiculous even if you just assumed it.
From here on our side, not that there is no political force, but there are also no individuals who would, for example, call for exit from the Atlantic Alliance. Ironically, the dictator's widow, Nexhmije Hoxha, ended her life as a member of NATO.
Here, no one thinks of a change of course, except that of one day joining the European Union. Many even proudly boast that we are the most pro-EU country on the continent.
Let's come to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. Has any voice ever been heard that gives justice to Moscow's positions on Crimea, Donbass or Zelenskiy-supporting Nazis? Of course not. Even the disregard is so great that there is an intellectual laziness even to recognize the positions and theses of Russian diplomacy.
So when is the impact of the ruble? Where does it affect the public sphere? Where does he threaten our society?
If we really have to talk about such a danger, it should be looked for in the servility of those who pretend to be "pro-Americans" and not in a fable or peace.
There is no sign of Russian influence in Albania. Precisely for this reason, because the socialists are setting up a special commission, manipulating its essence, this attempt has given wings to even the most ominous hypotheses. Is this a new attempt to intimidate the media, after the government failed with the anti-defamation package? Or maybe it is an initiative to invent a new version of the ruble opposition? To go further: is it a coincidence that the mandate of the commission extends until the next election?
No one can bet on the true intention of the initiates.
These accusations will all remain up in the air, as long as we are here building an imaginary cage for the distant Russian bear. But one thing is certain: those who seek to frighten us with a threat of peace surely have an evil intention.
