Bibi, Donald, Vladi, will you be like God?
Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu /

Among some political leaders, who are the main protagonists of the historical moment we are living, a false religious reference is increasingly being observed that is used to justify their actions. This type of discourse often serves as a means to increase political influence and to legitimize aggressive strategies in the international arena...

"The two madmen who play the role of God!" is the very catchy title of an article by Jeffrey Sachs, published a few days ago in "Il Fatto Quotidiano". I took this provocation seriously, overcoming the lack of empathy I feel for that newspaper and for the pro-Putin American author; for whom the "madmen who play the role of God" are only Trump and Netanyahu, while Putin or the Ayatollahs... are not even mentioned.

However, they “play the role of God”... So, I don’t know if they “play” or really believe in him. I lean towards the latter, given the serpent’s deceptive but convincing promise to Adam and Eve: “You will be like God!”

Of course, it is no coincidence that Pope Leo criticizes the "delirium of omnipotence" that destroys everything and closes every path to dialogue, as was sadly seen in the Islamabad negotiations.

Today we are witnessing the macabre spectacle of the strong (arrogant) with missiles and drones, who speak and act as if they have absolute power over humanity and the planet, presenting God as aligned with their side.

This is the ugly instrumentalization of the religious factor. To the point of "religious delirium" - says Sachs - of men who believe they are the Messiah who are carrying out the work of God, surrounded and supported by people who confirm and repeat this to them.

But there is also a counter-movement, originating from religions themselves, or rather from “deviant” religions, which entrust the realization of their goals to political (and military) means and leaders. In this way, these originally religious forms are transformed into ideologies easily usable by the authorities.

In a recent article in "Cronache Romane", Roberto De Mattei emphasizes that the error of these ideologies and doctrines lies in "interpreting the struggle between good and evil as a struggle between secular powers for world domination."

After his assassination attempt last year, Trump said God saved him to further his mission of making America great. His Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has a Jerusalem cross tattooed on his chest with the words “Deus vult” (God wills it), like a medieval crusader.

Netanyahu has described his armed actions as a new biblical page, calling them “wars of salvation,” and listing the “sores of war” (or plagues) just like in the holy text. But thousands of other signs could be cited.

Meanwhile, it is universally known that Trump is conditioned by the combination between Netanyahu and the powerful Jewish lobbies in the US. But he suffers from and also uses the influence of evangelical Protestantism.

This is a community that includes 20-25 percent of the US population, which includes a branch called "Christian Zionists", which holds significant levers of power in the economy and the media. For them too, US military support for Israel and the rebuilding of the Third Temple are steps in the fulfillment of biblical prophecies.

Vladimir Putin's chief ideologue, Aleksandr Dugin, theorizes Moscow as the "Third Rome," a global antithesis of civilization and values to the West. His vision is based on a combination of the Kremlin's will to power and the expansionist proselytizing plans of the Moscow Patriarchate.

"Russkij Mir", which in Russian means "Russian world" but also "Russian peace", describes a vision and project born from democratic intellectuals in the 1990s, which was then appropriated and alienated by Patriarch Kirill and ultimately split with Putin.

Initially, the “Russian world” expressed a desire to restore scattered human capital to post-communist Russia, to build a solid democracy in harmony with Russian culture. The Orthodox Patriarchate saw in this an opportunity to expand its influence, even beyond political borders.

The idea was asserted that wherever there was something Russian, there was also “Russkiy Mir”. The initial missionary impetus transformed into a nationalist ideology. Thus, the Orthodox Church offered Putin - who in the first periods of power did not have an ideology of his own - a new vision, a new language for an imperial project.

To later become a doctrine for the violent or an ideology for the aggressors, a religion must lose its religious feeling, erase the feeling of initial dependence.

of the human being. As a result, she also loses all love for the man, who is sacrificed for the project.

Then the word “To be like God” becomes an irresistible and destructive temptation. Pope Leo’s warning that “history is ruined by the arrogant and saved by the humble” is not a simple preaching illusion, but a challenging and realistic judgment on our reality.

See how much weight the assertion that Christianity is not a doctrine or ideology, but "that present Event" carries!/ Pamphlet from "Il Sussidiario"
