Praise for Kosovo's new democracy

With changing geopolitical situations and a new administration in America, Kosovo must also adapt to these changes.

It is not yet known which party will form the government in Kosovo. The citizens of Kosovo did not, through their vote, produce a winning party with an absolute majority, as happened with Vetëvendosje in the previous elections. It is very likely that Kosovo will enter a spiral of government formation that could last for a long time, something that has happened before.

In fact, these are the effects of Kosovo's electoral system, that of national proportional representation. A system that enables political representation, but which makes it difficult to form a government and its sustainability. Many times, the Kosovo government has not managed to complete its mandate to the end because of this system.

However, even though the electoral system has these effects on the formation of the government and its institutions, Kosovo's new democracy must be praised. An electoral process that went in the most democratic way possible, without incidents and in a peaceful manner.

In relation to Albania, but not only, Kosovo is perhaps an example to follow in the management of the electoral process and the behavior of voters. In Kosovo, unlike Albania, the result came out within two days. None of the political parties contested the result and everyone obeyed the will of the citizens. There were no accusations in Kosovo of criminals or gangs surrounding the voting centers. Nor were there accusations of vote buying or election manipulation among the political parties.

In this sense, Kosovo, although a new state, compared to Albania is a country that is far ahead at this point. And this is not a small achievement for Kosovar democracy. Even civic behavior in relation to politics is also many times more advanced. Voters in Kosovo do not vote for years in the same way as in Albania. But if you look carefully, the percentages of political parties change from election to election. Which shows that it is a society that judges, thinks depending on political behavior, and then decides on its vote.

The election result best demonstrated this characteristic of the flexibility of the electoral behavior of the citizens of Kosovo. The result clearly shows a wear and tear of the Vetëvendosje government after its full mandate, but that this dissatisfaction was not fully channeled by the opposition. Although Vetëvendosje failed to obtain a majority of deputies on its own and suffered a decline from the previous elections, the opposition in Kosovo failed to bring the necessary enthusiasm to the citizens of Kosovo.

However, the citizens of Kosovo have fulfilled their democratic duty by expressing their will, and it is now up to their politics to act with the responsibility that belongs to them and the very difficult challenges that the state of Kosovo faces.

Kosovo is facing very big challenges, especially in foreign policy. Therefore, it must have the wisdom and maturity to face them. The changing geopolitical situations and with a new administration in America, Kosovo must also adapt to these changes. And this is the responsibility of Kosovo politics, which must put the interests of the country before the strict personal interests of the government.
