The Interreligious Council of Albania (IRC) wrote in a letter that "We are in complete opposition to the government's initiative to draft a law recognizing homosexual marriages in the Republic of Albania and we express with indignation our concern about the danger that this law poses to Albanian society."
World media write that Berisha had made such a proposal to abolish visas with the EU.
In April 2013, Kristi Pinderi and Xheni Karaj met with Berisha, then prime minister. According to Pinderi, Berisha had supported the legalization of same-sex marriage.
"He hinted that he supports it because, as he said himself, it's the right thing to do, but he hinted that the pressure should come from the community itself at this point, so he told us that 'it's an icebreaker that needs to be broken and you're now on the right track,'" Pinderi said.
