Despite the ironic congratulations of Edi Rama, who was the only politician who showed solidarity, of course not in the proper etiquette, the news of Lulzim Basha's assassination was more than just media speculation.
To analyze an event or development, you need to look at the interest and benefits it may bring to some and problems for others.
It may also be an idiocy of the "God bless" media, which here we have no shortage of, but it is not at all surprising that we are dealing with a "signal and message" style political news.
In recent days, when Sali Berisha has opened the internal or primary race, more than one problem has emerged within the Democratic Party. This is not only due to the dissatisfaction of the branch leaders who have to leave if they want to be in the race, but also more than that.
MP Kreshnik Çollaku himself really touched the point of truth within the opposition, when he publicly admitted that in the territory, the DP base is divided. Çollaku, who is now on Berisha's side, made this position known, to illustrate or address the issue of the primaries, which in reality, are more of a propaganda gesture than a real competition between democrats.
In 2023, it became clear from Tirana to other areas that the voters for the "primaries" were mostly former LSI voters or sympathizers, and not members of the DP structures. Which Berisha has neither overthrown nor rebuilt.
Precisely, in the days when this clash over the primaries began in Berisha's DP, Lulzim Basha held a meeting with all the heads of branches in the districts. Anyone who knows the developments in the DP, saw that especially in the areas where the right has been a bastion for years, there were historical names and faces of the leadership of the branches and structures of the DP in the territory.
A political challenge, which of course in the May 11 elections, will be one of the most important developments in the political factorization of the opposition. Adding here also the parties that were born from the DP or new ones altogether.
Now, the news about "Basha's accidental death" may also be the work of media thugs, however, it must be said that blackmail has been used continuously in Albanian politics, especially within the ranks of the Democratic Party (DP) over the past 34 years.
A message that of course does not go to those leaders who gathered with Basha at the Tirana Hotel two days ago, but to the people at the grassroots level, who will need to "know well" where they need to go.
To date, television media have not conducted any normal on-the-ground monitoring of the existence of local DP structures, as it is an important indication of the balance of power. But this is not because reporters in the municipalities are unaware of it, but because they have not been asked by the editorial staff.
In Shkodra, local media colleagues, with whom I have been in regular contact since I worked as a reporter, provide feedback on developments there. Shkodra is a kind of important contender for the DP, as it has been an unmovable political bastion for 34 years. It is precisely in Shkodra that the old and classic structures of the DP are not under Sali Berisha, the most essential part of this core is with Lulzim Basha.
Meanwhile, the lack of connections on the ground in Shkodra was proven years ago in the municipal elections, but also in the way the new leaders of Berisha's party were elected. Meanwhile, at Basha's meeting, some of the most well-known and historic people in the organization of the DP were present. So it is not surprising that we are dealing with an indirect message, albeit a terrible one. Practically a pure mafia message.
