FBI raid on journalist and Pulitzer Prize for Washington Post reflect tensions between power and media in US

A Washington Post reporter faced an FBI investigation in January, and the paper was later awarded a Pulitzer Prize for an investigation she contributed to. The development puts institutional pressure on the media and professional recognition for their work on the same level.

The organization "Reporters Without Borders" estimates that attacks on the media in the United States under the presidency of Donald Trump have taken on a systematic character. In the ranking published at the end of April, the USA has fallen 7 places and is positioned in 64th place, between Botswana and Panama. The ranking analyzes the political, economic, legal and social environment, as well as the safety of journalists, where the greatest weakness is found in the political aspect.

Since his first term, Trump has described the media as "the enemy of the people," a term associated with totalitarian regimes. In his second term, according to the cited assessment, this approach is also reflected in practice.

On January 14, the FBI raided the home of journalist Hannah Natanson, seizing her phone and computers, and on the same day subpoenaed the Washington Post. The move is one of many that illustrate the deteriorating relationship between the administration and the media since the start of Trump's second term. The president regularly attacks journalists, seeks interference from public figures, and has filed lawsuits against several media outlets.

The search of the journalist's home marks a new level of tension, as authorities seek to uncover sources of information within the government, even though the media has a legal right to protect them. The Washington Post is challenging the move in court, calling it an unprecedented abuse of power.

Meanwhile, on another institutional level, the newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize in the "Public Service" category for reporting that revealed information about the Trump administration's dismantling of federal agencies and its consequences. This professional assessment contrasts the pressure on journalism with the importance of its public role.

The text also highlights an ironic element: under Jeff Bezos' ownership, the Washington Post has faced internal measures similar to those described in the federal administration, including the announcement in February of the layoff of 30 percent of the staff.

Pulitzer Prize director Marjorie Miller says the media faces enormous political and economic pressure. Many of the entries this year deal with the Trump presidency, which is reflected in the jury's decisions.

The New York Times won three Pulitzer Prizes, including one for an investigation into Trump's economic activities, which the jury said he used to benefit his family and allies. Another award was for an analysis of the rise of authoritarianism.

Reuters was praised for documenting the expansion of executive power and its use for political revenge, while the Associated Press won an award for an investigation into mass surveillance technologies and their use by border police.

In other categories, awards went to reporting on various events, including a massacre at a Catholic school and investigations into immigration policies and corporate practices. In news photography, the award went to images from the Gaza Strip documenting devastation and famine.

A special award was given to Julie K. Brown for her reporting on Jeffrey Epstein and the systematic abuse of girls and young women.

The Pulitzer Prizes, established in 1917, are awarded annually for outstanding achievements in journalism, literature and the arts, and the winners are selected from more than a thousand applications. /Adapted from SZ.de/
