It should have been Berisha who should have sent to the table concrete proposals for increasing the transparency of the campaign, its funds, instead of advertising closed lists that ensure the power of the boss and the armchairs of the servile...
An opposition MP, while discussing the new formula for dividing parliamentary mandates in the electoral code, openly "begged" Edi Rama not to campaign at all. You have already won the elections, said the deputy who is neither known to be soft on the government nor as a servile to Lulzim Basha.
However, Sali Berisha will not even listen to the deputy of his party. Berisha no longer listens to anyone who tells him to open the party and give space to the competition. The person who built Foltore, two years ago, with the promise of primaries, party opening and voting based on meritocracy, today shook Rama's hand at the electoral reform table, on the most surprising pact ever seen: keep power for for the fourth time in a row, just let me control the Democratic Party as I want, since I also got the seal and the coat of arms with a court decision!
The latest agreement on the formula for calculating mandates marks another triumph of the status quo over political elections in Albania. One hundred deputies of the Assembly, out of 140 of them, will be chosen (or rather appointed) by the major parties long before the voting day. Elections will be held for the remaining list of about 40 mandates, which makes predetermined not only the composition of the parliament, but also the future winner of the elections.
Rarely has one seen such a bitter and angry reaction of a part of the opposition MPs, but also of its other officials outside the parliament and the media orbiting around the right, regarding the electoral compromise. Rarely has such a widespread sense of surrender and despair been observed in the house of the Albanian opposition, as the country prepares to go to the parliamentary polls next year (unless Rama gets the idea to provoke early elections along the way).
If there was a party that should have been interested in breaking the democratic stagnation and moving from the country the stagnant waters of politics that start from the rules of the elections, as a prerequisite for victory, it was and is the opposition. She should have been the one to provoke the shaking of the electoral code, demanding direct competition with the government and opening the lists. And the opposition had plenty of time to weigh and measure the negotiations with the government for the elections. All the more so since the Constitutional Court had set clear milestones in this direction.
It should have been Berisha who should have sent to the table concrete proposals for increasing the transparency of the campaign, its funds, instead of advertising closed lists that ensure the power of the boss and the armchairs of the serviles, but suffocate any premise for the increase of voters' interest in the opposition's program, candidates and its electoral offer. Useless words for anyone who knows Sali Berisha well and his thirst to keep PD as if he had a private business.
By keeping the electoral system standing as it has been for more than a decade, Sali Berisha has done the best possible service to Edi Rama. Who would be crazy enough to change the rules of the game that have been proven many times to bring out the winner in the last decade.
Recent changes to the Electoral Code have finally brought a glimmer of hope for the immigrant vote, as well as increased gender representation. If this was the only goal of the opposition when it sat at the table with the government, then it can feel satisfied. But while the code opens the door for the vote of Albanians living abroad, it has, apparently, once again closed the door for the Albanian opposition to aspire to victory after 12 years of being in the minority.
The only "positive" note: The doctor held full power over the white sheet where the names of the candidates who will be sure of the post in the next Assembly will be thrown!
