Ismail Kadareja undoubtedly deserves the highest honor in relation to any cultural, political and intellectual personality of Albania.
The debate on Ismail Kadare's burial site seems to be drawn from his literature. There appear some of his characters from history, the gravedigger, the diarist, the clerk of the dream palace, the Party Secretary and other episodic characters, who in the first days of his absence seem to have been resurrected, taking control of the second life non-terrestrial of Ismail Kadare.
All those characters that he created to show us the disgusting and tragic side of the dictatorship now seem to come out of the pages of books to take control of his death. Someone wants him in Pristina together with Adem Jashari, others want him in their village, others project themselves holding his coffin on their arm and so on.
Ismail Kadareja undoubtedly deserves the highest honor in relation to any cultural, political and intellectual personality of Albania. He is the shaper of the western identity of the Albanian nation, the modern father of the Albanian language and the biggest contributor to its survival and modernization and undoubtedly the icon of Albania in the world.
The problem is that Albania is not ready to separate from it immediately.
Even Naim Frashëri did not leave Albania immediately. He was buried five times and as Petri Ruka so beautifully says, Albania did not want to part with him so quickly.
The separation of Albania with Ismail Kadare will not be a two-day process of national mourning or a family ceremony. They are part of the Albanian family tradition. The Albanian state and world personalities who want to part with Kadare will take their time and there will be a long protocol that will honor Ismail Kadare, his history and of course his new residence.
What is beautiful and bright these two days is that Albanians feel many times more united around the figure of Ismail Kadare, considering him a national pride. The mud of freedom that has tried to stain his image has simply produced more flowers in the wreaths that Albanians are placing on him these two days.
Albania has proven these two days that it is deeply hurt by the departure of its greatest man and this is a high national consciousness that makes us think beyond the doubts we often have about our society, that we deserved Ismail Kadare.
And this honor does not end today. Today he starts.
