George Soros is so close and has so much collaboration with Edi Rama that the title "Honorary Citizen", given by him as mayor, is the most useless thing in the relations between them.
George Soros was declared an "Honorary Citizen" on November 18, 2005, a few months after Berisha won the elections. The visit to Albania was an attempt by Berisha to reconcile with George Soros after their crisis in 1997. After the meeting, in a press release, "Berisha stated that Soros held an official meeting with Prime Minister Sali Berisha, where they discussed reforms, European integration and the role of the Open Society Foundation in Albania.
Berisha praised the support that the Soros Foundation had provided in the field of education and governance. The meeting was considered a clear sign that the new Albanian government was interested in cooperating with the Soros Foundation, despite political differences.
George Soros himself commented on Berisha's invitation, emphasizing that they had dinner together and discussed the future of the country, leaving aside political differences.
So, more than a visit to receive the title of "Honorary Citizen" in Albania, Soros came to be received by Sali Berisha with the hope that with his return to power he would neutralize Soros as an opponent of his, especially in relations with the US.
This is just to clarify the historical context of that visit. Relations between Sali Berisha and Edi Rama began to be tense after Berisha decided to disrupt the Zogu i Zi overpass, at the request of his son, since one of his soldiers had a palace in Zogu i Zi whose overpass occupied the first floors where he had a 30 percent share.
In this time period of tense relations between the government and Edi Rama, George Soros came more as a need for Berisha to repair relations with him.
This is just for historical context, since today I heard that Berisha's people have revealed that Soros has been made an "Honorary Citizen". That medal is an annex to the reception by Berisha. In fact, the awarding of the title was just to ensure that he would not leave empty-handed from the visit to Tirana and the meeting with Berisha.
Beyond this, George Soros is so close and has so much collaboration with Edi Rama that the title of "Honorary Citizen", given by him as mayor, is the most useless thing in the relations between them. It is only valid as a favor for Berisha, not as a favor for Rama.
Rama and George Soros have much stronger things in common in their cooperation. Therefore, the example they have found to serve Berisha in this case is weak, because it is something done to justify the meeting with Berisha.
