How many mandates did the DP lose due to Beleri's support?

On the side of the DP, it seems clear that positioning itself on the side of official Athens, especially the agendas of Greek nationalist circles, seems to have penalized it quite a bit.

Ardit Bido, is the third Socialist Party MP with the most preferential votes in the Vlora region. The General Director of the State Archives, based his election campaign mainly on the national issue.

Namely, Bido was a candidate clearly against the "Beleri" case or cause, with which Sali Berisha's Democratic Party, or the current opposition coalition, was "armed" since the local elections of May 14, 2023.

The political battle of Bido was a clear political solution to dismantle the cause of the Greek "Himara", and it even went further by extending the "patriotic" narrative even further.

In the end, this proved successful for Bido, who is now not just a political figure with whom Edi Rama's SP made an electoral political alliance, but will likely be one of the important politicians in the majority.

Edi Rama's Socialist Party, since 2009, when it took the maritime agreement signed by Sali Berisha's government with the Greek government to the Constitutional Court, has stamped in its political substratum the clear cause clashing with Athens' nationalist narrative.

A cause that Edi Rama has clearly designed politically in the governance of Albania since 2013. Rama's most important political antagonist has been the policy of the Greek government, with which he has not only clashed and fought, but Athens has also been politically engaged in overthrowing the SP majority.

This has been the case since 2015, when Athens attempted to split the governing majority in Albania, by decorating Ilir Meta, then speaker of the Albanian Parliament, and until today, when the Tirana-Athens clash has become one of the causes of domestic politics.

The DP, a part of its electorate not only in the south, has had a "nationalist" commitment as part of its narrative over the years. Which after 1997, became a pamphlet to cover up the overthrow of Sali Berisha from power in the following year.

The agreements with the Greek government after 2005, from the cemeteries of Greek soldiers to the naval pact in 2009, severely undermined this so-called patriotic fable. With his ouster from power in 2013, after the important alliance of Edi Rama's government with Erdogan, Berisha's pro-Greek approach became increasingly stronger.

To arrive in 2023, when he was established as the joint candidate of the PD-LSI, Fredi Beleri in the Himara municipality. A case that in addition to the close battle in the coastal municipality, has taken a national approach to the political battle for two years. Even crossing the boundaries of a Tirana-Athens relationship, it was transplanted into relations with the European Union. Where Tirana managed to secure an important political victory.

This is a battle that has had and still has its electoral "ration" in every confrontation, but especially in the May 11 elections.

But how much has this important political part really been in favor of the SP in the territory? On the other hand, that is, in the DP, it seems clear that positioning itself on the side of official Athens, especially the agendas of Greek nationalist circles, seems to have penalized it quite a bit. By also taking away that part of its electorate that it had mainly in the southern part.

Thus, in the villages of the Himara municipality, the DP had a significant slice of the vote in the nationalist “ration” of this vote, mainly in Borsh, Pilur or even in the villages of the Vlorë River. Meanwhile, the electorate of the Cham community, in the Vlorë district, clearly seems to have voted against the DP, respectively for the SP. This electorate has traditionally been right-wing and more predisposed to vote for the DP in the country’s electoral history.

In addition to the Vlora region, this part of the electorate is also spread in the Fier region, the Durrës region, and especially in Tirana, where in some areas and municipalities, it has the largest concentration.

This was seen in the results of Shpëtim Idrizi's PDIU, which lost support thanks to the alliance over the Beleri issue. Meanwhile, the SP's alliance with this patriotic substratum, where Ardit Bido was the most prominent representative, had a clear benefit.

At least one mandate in Vlora, one in Fier, one in Tirana and half in Elbasan and Durrës, has come, as can be seen, only from this part of the electorate which, at least in terms of electoral behavior in the elections held over the years, has been closest to the Democratic Party.
