Even two hundred prisons would not be enough to punish the corrupt mentality. We demand honesty, while we are part of a tradition that between the honest and the thief, we easily choose the latter.
As a society, we have encouraged evil and discouraged good. We have failed at all levels of education and schooling, giving our children the role model of the strong, talking about getting rich quick through illegal means, and bombarding them daily through screens with role models who promote a life of luxury without working a day in their lives.
Years ago, when I asked my students what profession they would choose when they grew up, one of them gave an epic answer: “Drug dealer.” It was 2016-2017, the peak of the country’s cannabisization, when in Albania all they talked about was narcotic plants and cannabis.
The school continues to fail successfully, while only talking about achievements and successes. Without a deep reflection, transforming our entire educational system, the day of its bankruptcy will not be far off. But there can be no change in our lives, without first happening in our way of thinking. We demand justice, while we are members of a mindset that from the most lost guard of an institution to the highest government leader, we have a mind on how to make some money, some with two thousand lekës, some with 2 million euros.
Even two hundred prisons would not be enough to punish the corrupt mentality. We demand honesty, while we are part of a tradition that between the honest and the thief, we easily choose the latter.
We demand that injustice not be done to us, while, as soon as we are given the chance, it is easier for us to choose the unjust than the just. We demand enlightened politicians, and as soon as we are given the chance, we vote for the ignorant.
We seek wisdom, while we mistake wisdom in others for weakness.
We complain about brutality, while we take prudence for granted.
We complain that we are being kicked around like we are weak, while we admire the "strong" to the point of adoration.
We complain that we are being lied to, but on the other hand, we rush to vote for those who lie to us the best.
For change to happen, it must first start with us, with our way of thinking and reasoning. If you yourself lack morality, how can immoral politicians surprise you!
If you yourself swim in the waves of lies, the truth will surely lose its meaning! If virtue looks shame in the eye and blushes, what can you say about those people who are more successful in lying than in telling the truth.
Even though they understand, they say: "Aman, you lied to us!"
For things to go well in this country, politics should not be done by the lazy, the ignorant, and the stupid. The one who lies the best, the one who steals the most, or the one who lets us steal should not be elected as a representative.
Albania can only be saved by encouraging good and discouraging evil. Otherwise, evil will continue to gain ground and drown us in its darkness.
