A record amount of cocaine in the possession of a single person has been seized by the Italian police in Reggio Emilia. The authorities have discovered a total of 72 kg of cocaine and 50 thousand euros in cash, which were in the possession of a 29-year-old Albanian.
It all started on June 21, with a routine road check of a "Peugeot 208" car, which was driving towards Cavriago from the Mapei stadium area.
The man driving the car disobeyed the officers' orders to stop and did the exact opposite by attempting to speed away.
After a chase that lasted several minutes, the fugitive tried to evade the police on a road that ended up being blocked and then abandoned the vehicle on the road.
Despite his efforts, the 29-year-old Albanian was immediately blocked by the police. From the initial check, 30,000 euros in cash, wrapped in three bundles of natriban, were discovered in the Albanian's car.
The checks then continued at his home, in the Mapei Stadium area.
In the garage available to the young man, there was a second car. Inside it were found 48 packages of cocaine, with the logo of the well-known firms "Boss" and "Louis Vuitton" stamped on the packages, to guarantee the recognition of the supply chain.
Also found were two kilograms vacuum-packed and five wrapped in an irregular shape. The vehicle also has a hidden place where 9 other packages with the same logo and two bundles of money, with ten thousand euros each, were found.
In total, there are about 72 kg of cocaine that on the desk of the police station look like bricks that are enough to raise a low wall.
"In the wholesale market, this amount could reach the value of 2 million and 200 thousand euros", explained officer Guglielmo Battisti.
Controls on the active ingredient will determine the degree of purity of the cocaine, but it can be calculated that, after it had been cut to be sold in small doses, the drug would have brought traffickers profits in the amount of 6 million euros.
The Italian police are still unclear about where the cocaine came from and how it fell into the hands of the 29-year-old Albanian, who was arrested in the act for distributing drugs.
But the authorities believe that based on the quantity and the care of the packaging, the drugs came directly from the manufacturers, without intermediaries, and this leads to Latin America.
