A man in Thessaloniki who threatened to kill his wife because her daughter did not wash the dishes on Easter was convicted of domestic violence.
The defendant was found guilty by the Criminal Court A member of Thessaloniki for the charge of intimidation and insult and was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for three years.
According to the woman's complaint, everything happened around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, when the couple returned home and saw that there were unwashed dishes in the kitchen, while they had been gone all day.
"My older daughter left them and he got angry, started shouting that he didn't take them, didn't wash them and I tried to tell him to calm down. He was constantly yelling and calling my daughter to come home and wash the dishes," the woman testified.
"Then he started insulting me obscenely, telling me many other things. The children started to cry. He was yelling that he was going to find my daughter and take her back to wash the dishes. I was telling him to calm down and that it's Easter and he threatened to strangle me at night while I was sleeping and pay a man to burn my car. He knows I've been afraid of him for a long time, we have heated arguments every week," she added.
The woman told the judges that this was not the first time her husband had threatened to kill her as on other occasions he had verbally abused her and their children, causing her to fear for her life.
"I'm afraid at night and I can't sleep, I call my sister. When he gets angry he doesn't know what he is doing, he becomes very violent and manipulative. Our children are crying and he doesn't care. "I don't care if you all suffer," she says to me and our minor children , she said.
Regarding how she decided to report him, the victim explained that on the Sunday of the incident she called her sister to feel safe, as she was afraid that her husband might carry out his threats and then notified the police to report the incident.
"After the arrest, he sent me a message in the morning asking for forgiveness. He used to say I will do whatever you want. I am afraid of him, I want him to leave the house" , the woman said.
In search of forgiveness, the defendant denied threatening his wife, but admitted that he abused her, saying however that it was done out of anger that he had to wash the dishes and clean the house himself.
