Following the operation that led to the dismantling of three Albanian criminal groups involved in cocaine trafficking in the L'Aquila area, Italian media report that the battle against drug networks is not over. According to them, the next objective is to identify and strike at what is considered the "secret directorate" that directed the criminal activity from Albania.
In an analysis published by the Italian media "Il Capoluogo", it is stated that investigations by the Antimafia District Prosecutor's Office and the Carabinieri of L'Aquila have uncovered elements that speak of the existence of a single coordination center, which constantly supplied criminal organizations with drug dealers and managed their activity on Italian territory.
The interrogation sessions for the persons who were ordered to be detained were held yesterday, in the presence of defense lawyers. However, during the press conference, the Italian authorities did not provide details on further developments in the investigation.
According to investigative documents, the three criminal groups targeted in L'Aquila did not operate entirely independently of each other. Investigators suspect that behind them stood a "single Albanian organization", capable of coordinating the supply of drugs and guaranteeing the continuity of criminal activity.
Italian media reports that this structure is suspected of operating from Albania, organizing the sending of people involved in the distribution of cocaine to Italy. In addition to L'Aquila, during the investigation, movements and contacts in other Italian regions have also been identified, particularly in Tuscany and Lazio.
One of the most important elements of the scheme was the constant supply of new distributors. According to investigators, the leaders of the organizations did not personally handle the delivery of drugs to customers, but used new people who arrived from Albania on tourist visas.
The distributors were equipped with rented vehicles, mainly obtained in Rome, and were sent to carry out the distribution of small quantities of cocaine in L'Aquila and the surrounding areas. The drugs were stored in apartments or houses located on the outskirts of the city and in the surrounding villages.
According to Italian media, the use of small quantities of drugs and the activation of people with no criminal records was part of the organization's strategy. In the event of arrest by the police, these people were often quickly released and then returned to Albania, being replaced by others.
Investigators have described this mechanism as a well-organized system that guaranteed the continuity of criminal activity, making it difficult to identify the network's leadership structures.
However, the Antimafia Prosecutor's Office and the Carabinieri of L'Aquila managed to go beyond the arrests of low-level distributors, dismantling three different criminal organizations operating in the territory.
Now, according to "Il Capoluogo", the next challenge is to identify and crack down on the structure that is suspected of coordinating the activity from Albania. The Italian media emphasizes that this phase of the investigation requires international cooperation and the activation of joint mechanisms between Italian and Albanian authorities.
"Our people have done their part more than well. Now other channels must be activated to hit the drug distribution factory outside the national territory," writes the Italian media, referring to the need for international cooperation in continuing the investigations.
So far, Italian authorities have not made public the identities of the individuals suspected of directing criminal activity from outside Italy, while investigations continue.
