The Düsseldorf Regional Court has sentenced a gang of seven people to several years in prison for the organized cultivation and trade of cannabis in Germany. The decision comes about a year after investigators seized more than 6,300 cannabis plants from illegal plantations in May 2025.
According to the indictment, 7 Albanian citizens aged 21 to 51 were accused of commercial cultivation of cannabis, organized trafficking of significant quantities of narcotics and assistance in the commission of these criminal offenses.
The prosecution stated that the group had set up several large cannabis plantations in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, including the areas of Dormagen, Lüdenscheid and Bad Salzuflen.
The court sentenced the four main defendants to terms ranging from 3 years and 7 months to 7 years in prison, depending on their role in the criminal activity. Another member of the group received a sentence of two and a half years in prison, while two others were sentenced to two years and ten months. The decisions have not yet become final.
According to the indictment, the two leaders of the group had rented property and recruited five compatriots to manage the plantations on an ongoing basis. The workers, aged between 21 and 34, were promised a payment of 10,000 euros for each harvest. Each production cycle, according to the investigation, provided about 150 kilograms of cannabis.
Prosecutor Meike Beckmann said the plantations were discovered during another criminal investigation into a planned kidnapping at a drug trafficking facility. In that case, two Latvian mercenaries were charged, allegedly hired by an Asian drug lord to kidnap a person. They were identified by a police patrol and arrested.
Further investigations then led to the individuals convicted in this process. The authorities kept them under surveillance for several weeks and in early May 2025 intervened by dismantling the illegal plantations.
According to investigators, the plantations consumed an average of about two million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, an amount equivalent to the annual consumption of about 400 families. The electricity was allegedly taken illegally from the power grid.
