Within two days, over 75,000 euros were raised on the GoFundMe platform for the Kola family, which lost four members in Porcari, in the province of Lucca, as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The fundraising initiative was taken by Durim Kola, the brother of Arti Kola, who lost his life.
According to the organizers, the amount will serve to cover funeral expenses and transport the bodies to Albania, where the funeral ceremonies will take place.
The rest of the funds will be used to support families.
The tragic event claimed the lives of Arti Kola, his wife Jonida, 43, and their two children, Hadjar, 22, and Jessica, 15. Italian authorities have announced that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning, produced by a gas boiler recently installed in the apartment.
Donations have been made by dozens of citizens, with amounts ranging from 50 to 500 euros.
The Lucca prosecutor's office has launched investigative procedures to clarify the circumstances of the incident. Preliminary suspicions are related to the boiler, which was reportedly new and installed by the owner of the apartment.
Meanwhile, authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology tests on the four victims, which will determine the next steps in the investigation. After the completion of legal procedures, the bodies will be sent to Albania for burial.
