Greek police have provided details of the arrest of businessman Ilir Shtufi a day ago, who was detained as part of an operation undertaken by SPAK against drug trafficking and money laundering.
According to Greek authorities, Shtufi entered Greece in the early hours of yesterday, from a border station in the north of the Greek state. He was reportedly located in a hotel in Thessaloniki and then escorted by police.
So the signals are that Shtufi was informed about the SPAK action and fled to Greece. But according to sources, he was under monitoring by SPAK and became very localised.
“ The investigation revealed that the aforementioned person had entered our country in the early hours of the same day from a border station in Northern Greece. The competent police services were immediately mobilized, within the framework of which he was located in a hotel in Thessaloniki and escorted for further examination. At the same time, through the established procedures of international police cooperation, it was confirmed that an International Red Notice for Wanted was pending against him by the Authorities of his country with a view to his arrest and extradition for criminal offenses related to participation in a structured criminal organization and money laundering, arising, among others, from drug trafficking cases. Following information from the competent Thessaloniki Appeal Prosecutor, a provisional arrest warrant was issued against him and he was arrested, in order to follow the established procedures ,” the Greek police stated.
The suspicions are that Shtufi was headed to Turkey and according to sources he stated that he would return to Albania on Monday. Meanwhile, SPAK has also seized his wife's mobile phone.
The Special Prosecution Office and the police conducted a wide-ranging operation yesterday, issuing 20 security measures, including several businessmen.
It is suspected that the businessmen were involved in a money laundering scheme within a criminal group, money that was generated in the construction field of these businessmen.
According to the official announcement, the investigation launched in 2021 has documented the activity of a structured criminal group that is suspected of trafficking cocaine from Latin America to Europe, while the profits obtained were then invested in real estate, construction projects, trading companies and tourism businesses in Albania.
SPAK informs that the Special Court has ordered the measure "Prison Arrest" for 15 people and "House Arrest" for 5 others. So far, some of the measures have been executed.
According to the investigations, the persons under investigation AH and LK are suspected of having a leading role in organizing the international trafficking of cocaine from Latin American countries to the ports of Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.
Investigators have documented an organized structure that dealt with the supply, transportation, storage, chemical processing and distribution of cocaine in several European countries.
One of the main episodes of the file relates to the seizure of 441 kilograms of cocaine in Barcelona, Spain, where several people involved in drug transportation were arrested. SPAK says that other seizures of significant quantities of cocaine have also been documented in the Netherlands, Italy and the United Kingdom.
A significant portion of the evidence was obtained from communications decoded on the encrypted SKY ECC platform, telephone interceptions, and cooperation with law enforcement authorities in several European countries.
