During the investigations, several key members of the network were identified, all of Albanian origin, including those responsible for the plantations.
In Catalonia, the Albanian mafia has managed to "grade" itself as the main player in the illegal marijuana business. Dozens of clans, some allied, others in conflict, have expanded their activities throughout Catalonia.
In industrial warehouses, apartments, commercial premises and villas, every available space becomes a new business opportunity for these criminal organizations.
This is the case of members of a network that was recently dismantled by agents of the Territorial Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Region in the South of the Mossos d'Esquadra, as part of the police operation "Trifásico".
In total, 13 people were arrested, including the plantation's "gardeners", middlemen, and the organization's leader.
They had been operating in the illegal "green gold" business in Catalonia for years.
According to Deputy Inspector Durán, the police operation was a decisive blow against one of the most active suspected criminal cells in the region, known for its ability to quickly set up new plantations.
On this occasion, three new crops have been dismantled: one in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, another in Granollers and another on a farm in Vallirana.
The latter was owned by an individual of Spanish origin, who acted as a front for the organization and was responsible for acting as an intermediary between the first manager, responsible for rental payments for the premises, and the group's leader.
The investigation began six months ago, when officers discovered abnormal energy consumption in a warehouse in Santa Coloma de Cervelló (Barcelona). This initial indication led the Mossos d'Esquadra to suspect illegal activities within the premises.
From there, investigations were opened and surveillance of people who frequented the warehouse began, which led to the discovery of possible links to two other locations, one in Granollers and another in Valliran.
High electricity consumption was also reported at both locations, reinforcing suspicions of illegal activities.
During the investigation, several key members of the network, all of Albanian origin, were identified, including those responsible for the plantations. With all this information, the Narcotics Group at the Southern Metropolitan Territorial Investigation Unit has carried out the final phase of the operation.
As a result, 13 people were arrested and 5,000 marijuana plants were seized. In addition, agents seized four firearms from the Spanish broker's home, an increasingly frequent discovery, as criminal organizations of this type are usually armed.
