An Argentinian truck driver has disappeared without a trace in Italy, while since May 22 there is no information on where he may have ended up. Nicolas Del Rio, 48, disappeared while transporting a load of bags, with a value of 500 thousand euros. The event considered a mystery can be clarified by the Italian law enforcement authorities who have launched an investigation.
During the weekend, an Albanian and a Turk were arrested, while the other members of the gang are being sought. The Albanian was arrested at Ciampino airport as he was about to board a flight to Tirana. Turku was arrested on Saturday in Arcidosso. They are both in the prison of Grosseto. They are suspected of being involved in the disappearance of the Argentinian truck driver. The lines of investigation so far have focused on the robbery of a load of bags worth around 500,000 euros, made for a famous fashion house.
The truck with the load was found burnt, while there is no trace of the truck driver.
Del Rio's wife, like his brother, tells the media that the Italian Police did not complete the task of finding the 48-year-old who they suspect was killed or 'handed over' to the mafia.
The family of the missing truck driver also discovered a strange phone call from an Albanian, identified as Goni.
Disappearance after a phone call between the boss and 'Gon'
Nicolas Del Río, a 48-year-old Argentine, in the Italian province of Siena, was making a delivery for Sergio De Ciço, his current boss, with whom he formed a strong friendship and whom he met a few months ago in a supermarket, a few weeks after he landed in that country.
From there he worked as a truck driver for De Ciço's company, Neë Futura. Even on the day he disappeared, he was sending a shipment to the Siena area, 84 kilometers from Florence.
According to the complaint filed in court, Del Rio disappeared on May 22 while carrying a shipment of 300 Amiata brand bags, worth 500,000 euros, but such bags would never reach their destination. Days later, his truck was found burned in the Italian town of Roçalbegna. On the day of the disappearance, according to the truck driver's wife and his brother, someone set a trap for them.
Del Rio's brother revealed that there was a very strange phone call that day, just a few minutes before Nicolas' cell phone went off, between the boss, an Albanian named "Goni" and the Argentine himself. Apparently, according to the interception of the cell phone and the testimony of the boss, Nicolas Del Río was contacted on the street by an Albanian, who has been identified as Goni.
He would have asked him for help to carry out his transport, as his vehicle was supposed to have broken down, to which Nicolas offered a hand. Since he did not know him, the Argentine decided to call his contractor and friend Sergio De Cicco, explaining the unforeseen event. There, the Albanian asked him to speak with De Cicco and started mentioning people who allegedly worked at the Neë Futura goods company.
He had a strange phone call with his boss. A certain Goni said he knew him and that he needed to pick up some boxes at a certain place, but my brother's boss told him that place had closed a year and a half ago.
A witness heard a shot
That's why Sergio De Cicco, Nicolas' boss, is the key person in solving the case of the trucker's disappearance, since he was the last one to talk to him. Before the Italian justice, De Cicco said that there was a second person in the van, but according to the family there are inconsistencies in his statements.
"At first he said that he offered to accompany him on the trip, but my brother insisted on going alone. Then he said he asked him to go alone. Was it such a coincidence that the day my brother allegedly asked to make the trip, this happened to him," said Ezequiel Del Rio.
On the morning of May 24, two days after the disappearance of Nicolás Del Río, his truck was found burned in Roccalbegna (Grosseto), without any trace of the Amiata bags, while the empty boxes were found a kilometer and a half away. The Italian police are investigating the incident as a surprise robbery of the "asphalt piracy" type with the colors of the Albanian mafia and think that the truck driver may have been kidnapped or even killed, according to the Corriere Adriano portal.
The RAI network covered the case of the missing Argentinian truck driver and spoke exclusively to Sergio, the father of Nicolás del Río.
Italian public television made the same journey from Siena to Castel del Piano on the trail of the Albanian identified as "Goni", even asking door to door. A transporter told them that he knew someone by that name and was indeed Albanian, but that he did not had seen for a long time.
