One year after the murder of 22-year-old Albanian student Ilaria Sula, her family continues to face the pain of loss and the demand for justice.
Her father, Flamur Sula, says that the incident could have been avoided if there had been a different reaction from the author's mother.
"Maybe Ilaria could have been saved. If the killer's mother had raised the alarm instead of helping him clean up the blood, things could have gone differently. She is an adult and, in my opinion, is more guilty than her son," he said.
Thursday, March 26, marks one year since the crime that shocked public opinion. According to the defendant's statements in court, the incident occurred at the end of March, while the Sula family links the beginning of this tragedy to March 29, when Ilaria did not return to the apartment.
The suspected perpetrator is in prison awaiting a final verdict, while his mother has benefited from a plea deal and has been sentenced to two years in prison for her role in hiding the body.
This decision is opposed by Flamur Sula, who considers it unfair.
"Now she pretends to cry, but this is unbelievable. This is not justice for me. Our pain never ends, this is our eternal punishment," he says, emphasizing that the family lives every day with the absence of their daughter.
Ilaria's mother, Gëzime Sula, remembered her daughter through an emotional message on social media, describing her as "her little star" and "a wonderful angel."
In her memory, awareness-raising activities against gender-based violence have been organized in the city of Terni. An activity with discussions, readings and artistic presentations was held at the “Casa delle Donne”, where the need for education and awareness of young people in the fight against violence was emphasized.
The activity also included the presentation of the artwork "Cut Flowers", a symbol of lives cut short as a result of violence.
Meanwhile, the trial against the perpetrator continues. In the last session, he provided details about the crime and how the body was hidden, while the next session is scheduled for May 19.
