Following the discovery of a mobile phone in the cell of Bledar Selmanaj, accused of the murder of Xhulio Bullari, the General Directorate of Prisons has intensified checks at Peqin prison.
During surprise checks carried out by the Operational Forces, a mobile phone was also discovered in the cell of Gazmend Braka, otherwise known as "Gaxhai".
It is reported that during the checks, a total of four mobile phones were found, while work is underway to identify how the devices were brought inside the prison premises.
So far, there has been no official reaction from the General Directorate of Prisons regarding the action and measures expected to be taken following the discovery of the prohibited equipment.
Checks in penitentiary institutions have increased significantly in recent weeks, as part of measures to crack down on illegal items brought into cells.
Gazmend Braka, known by the nickname "Gaxhai", is a well-known name in the criminal world in Albania, mainly associated with the events of the 1997 riots in Vlora.
He was considered one of the main figures of the armed groups operating in the coastal city at that time. His name became public during the clashes and conflicts of that time, and was subsequently involved in various investigative and judicial processes.
"Gaxhai" has been arrested and convicted over the years for various criminal offenses. He has recently returned to the spotlight due to the checks and operations conducted in Peqin prison, where he is serving his sentence.
Formed in March 1997, Gaxhai's gang was a rival to the Çole gang, led by Zani Çaushi. The clash between them began on May 9 of that year, when Bernard Duçka, known as Kuqo, a member of Gaxhai's gang, was killed.
The latter, in response, attempted to take the police armored vehicles to fight with Zani, but failed. With the end of the riots and the arrest of members of the two gangs, the war between them ended.
But until the end, the young people's blood was hot and they sought revenge at all costs. The group founded by Gaxhai had its headquarters in Cerkovina.
