The murder of the elderly couple in the village of Brodishte in Dropulli, which shocked the city of Gjirokastra last week, has been revealed.
The police have stated that the suspected perpetrator of the double crime, their 69-year-old neighbor Thoma Mastora, was arrested for this incident.
Thoma Mastora was previously convicted of theft. According to the police, the author and the couple had a previous conflict.
From the investigations, the couple was beaten to death by Mastora with sharp objects and cutting tools.
It was the examination of biological evidence by the scientific police that identified the perpetrator of the murder of Kosta and Kleoniqi Ilia, 84 and 88 years old.
On the day of the event, the author of the macabre crime went to the apartment of the elderly couple, where it is suspected that he drank coffee with the latter and then killed him with hard objects.
"From the preliminary checks, it turned out that the man was dead in the yard, while the woman was inside the apartment. Signs of violence were found on different parts of the body and head. No signs of theft were found. From the conducted investigations, it was concluded that they were hit by hard objects. Items and tools suspected to be related to the incident were taken to find the perpetrator. From the control in the apartment, in addition to other evidence, a value of 5 million new leks was found that the couple in the apartment, 35 people were questioned. The investigation showed that the motive together with the author. The evidence showed that the author is a fellow villager, for whom the order for his arrest was executed", the police announcement states.
The cause of the crime is suspected to have been the intent of the perpetrator to take the property (land) of the elderly couple in the village of Bridishtë.
The Ilia couple had no biological children, but had an adopted daughter whom they had not seen for 10 years, who lived in Greece.

To find out, the investigative team returned to the elderly people's apartment where they were found dead and with signs of violence on their bodies.
How did the crime happen?
The serious event took place on May 2, 2024 in the village of Bodrishte, Municipality of Dropull. It was 8:00 a.m. when neighbors found the elderly couple Kosta Ilia, 84, and Kleoniqi Ilia, 88, dead and with signs of violence on their bodies. The elderly woman was found dead in the apartment, while the 84-year-old man was found dead in the yard of their apartment.
The police initially escorted four people, among them three residents of the village and a shepherd, who are suspected of having knowledge of the brutal crime. The crowbar was also found, which is believed to be the weapon with which the crime was committed.
"From the preliminary examination of the bodies of the 2 citizens, signs of violence were found, suspected to have been caused by strong circumstantial means. Also, from the preliminary examination of the scene of the incident, no broken doors or windows were found, and inside the apartment there was no disorders of the furniture were found", said the police.
