The Supreme Court has upheld the life imprisonment sentence for Denis Straza, accused of the kidnapping resulting in the death of Gazmend Çollak 8 years ago, in Durrës.
A Criminal Panel decided not to accept his challenge to the June 2018 Serious Crimes Appeal Court decision, which also upheld the life sentence.
The verdict against Straza was taken by senior judges Ilir Panda, Sokol Binaj and Sandër Simoni, more than 4 years from the moment he sought to overturn the heavy sentence, claiming innocence in this court.
Straza has been charged with Serious Crimes as one of the persons involved in the kidnapping, tying up, holding hostage, torturing and then killing Gazmend Çollak. The latter was kidnapped on the evening of January 6, 2016 in the parking lot of a bar near the Port of Durrës and was found the next day dead on the side of a road in Fushë-Kruje. For the same event, the prosecution also raised suspicions against Ervin Dalipaj, the former police officer who was executed in a mafia assassination in April 2017, near Sukthi, while he was wanted by justice.
One of the strong evidences against him in the trial were some blood stains of Gazmend Çollak on a "Mercedes Benz ML" vehicle, in which Ervin Dalipaj and Denis Shtraza traveled 3-4 hours after the event. According to the court, Gazmend Çollaku was abducted by another vehicle with luggage and that the "Benz" vehicle was used after this moment. In all three stages of the trial, the defendant Denis Shtraza claimed innocence, strongly denying the accusation.
