50-year-old Ervin Shahini was arrested on January 26 of this year in South Korea, after being wanted by Albanian justice since 1997.
Shahini escaped from Albania after being sentenced to life imprisonment as accused of killing a taxi driver, while trying to rob him, as well as injuring 4 other people.
Since his escape, the 50-year-old had used the name of another Albanian to identify himself.
In the first days of 2024, Interpol Tirana agents, who are now a specialized unit for tracking and capturing wanted persons, together with their colleagues from Korea, knocked on the door of Shahini's apartment.
The search for Shahini, also known as the Taxi Driver Killer, began in 2015 and ended with his arrest in 2024.
History of criminal events:
This citizen, at various times in 1995, using cold weapons (knives), killed and injured citizens who worked as taxi drivers. After billing them as taxis, to go to the desired destinations, this citizen hit the drivers of the vehicles with a knife, took their vehicles and left the scene. He used the same mechanism in all events, namely:
- on 15.05.1995, in cooperation with the citizens of AM and NK, he wounded the citizens of PB and AA with a knife
- on 10.07.1995, wounded SH citizen with a knife;
- on 27.08.1995, killed the citizen Xh. A.;
- on 27.10.1995, wounded citizen II with a knife; the State Police informed today.
The 50-year-old was declared an international wanted man, after the Court of Appeal, Tirana, sentenced him to life imprisonment for the criminal offenses "Theft with violence resulting in death", "Theft with violence", carried out in collaboration and "Escape of the prisoner from the place of stay".
The arrest in the Republic of Korea was carried out as part of the "INFRA ATLAS" operation and as a result of the exchange of police intelligence between the Interpol Directorate, Interpol Seoul and the Interpol General Secretariat (Fugitives Investigative Support (FIS) Sector).
First, Shahini left for Greece, then for the USA, and for several years he went to South Korea, where he was arrested.
During the coded police operation "Support" it became possible to locate him in Korea and provisionally arrest him, with the aim of extraditing Shahini.
This citizen resided in the Republic of Korea. From the information and verifications, it turned out that citizen Ervin Shahini used the identity of another Albanian citizen to avoid arrest.
