Antoni Gaudí, the famous Catalan architect who designed the Sagrada Família Basilica in Barcelona, has officially been set on the path to sainthood. The Vatican announced that Pope Francis has recognized his “heroic virtues,” an important first step in the long process of canonization in the Catholic Church.
Long known as the "Architect of God" for his religious devotion and use of Christian symbols in his architectural works, there have long been efforts to declare him a saint.
The Association for the Sanctification of Gaudí, once led by architect José Manuel Almuzara, counted over 80,000 followers who prayed for his intercession and for miracles.
Gaudí dedicated the last 12 years of his life to the construction of the Sagrada Família, a church that even today, more than 140 years after its beginning in 1882, remains unfinished.
Pope Benedict XVI consecrated this church in 2010, describing it as "a praise to God, made of stone."
2026, the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, was initially announced as the final date for the completion of the basilica. However, the COVID-19 pandemic halted work and reduced tourism revenue, indefinitely postponing its completion.
Gaudí's canonization process will now require a miracle recognized by the Church to move to the next step: canonization.
But for many, his very works are already a testament to holiness.
