Mevlan Shanaj is a loved figure for the Albanian public as an actor, director, producer and screenwriter. In his early years, he started school as a medical assistant and worked for two years in this profession, but later left it halfway to devote himself to art.
Invited to "Profil", Euronews Albania, he confessed that he had a role model, Aleksandër Moisiu, and wanted to be like him, and this pushed him to change his life path and become an artist.
In 1970, he got his first role as Ibrahim Kovaçi or Commissioner Memo in the movie "8th in the Bronx", a movie that paved the way not only for his involvement in cinematography but also for his recognition with big names.
Mevlan Shanaj, in addition to having played roles loved by the Albanian public, is the director of many films before and after the 90s such as "Red flowers, black flowers", "White sheets", "I paharruari", "A telegram a song", "Emperor's Bullets", Palace 176" etc.
The artist was also asked about the discussion on the deletion of films before the 90s, where he answered harshly and with criticism for those who have brought this discussion: "The artists who have asked for the deletion of films before the 90s are mediocre". He even did not agree to mark the films as he called it "ignorance".
As for his family life, the director told about the secret that his marriage continues happily for more than half a century with the poet and writer Natasha Lako. He said that respect keeps a relationship going because love is fleeting.
"I haven't made the best film of my career yet, until now I was rehearsing, now I know..." Shanaj confessed.
According to him, art and culture make people smarter and more open-minded.
"Albanians would be more people if they watched movies and read books. If they watch movies, they become more social, more restrained, more knowledgeable citizens. Only thoughts come from art and culture", said Mevlan Shanaj.
The artist also commented on Ismail Kadare, for whom he expressed his appreciation and said that the Albanians who anathema him have no right.
"Ismail Kadare is an artist from Albania, translated into 46 languages. Shut up, who are you anonymous? You are a man who does not know how to read between the lines. He made compromises, he did too. There are 46 nations that need his mind," said Shanaj. He is a loved figure for the Albanian public as an actor, director, producer and screenwriter.
