Middle school students in Florida will now only have to know a portion of Shakespeare's work after new guidelines for sexually explicit texts have been introduced into the curriculum.
According to SKY News, teachers have been told that classic books contain sexual content, so they cannot be studied in schools.
"Some of Shakespeare's plays use puns and suggestive innuendo, and it is implied that the protagonists in Romeo and Juliet have had premarital sex.
However, the playwright's books will be available to check out in the media centers at the schools," the district said.
"First and foremost, we have not eliminated Shakespeare from our high school curriculum," a spokesperson said in a statement.
This comes after the passage of the Parents' Rights in Education Act, known by DeSantis' opponents as the "Don't Say Gay" law.
The Parental Rights in Education Act also states that material of a sexual nature should not be used in classes that do not deal with sexual health or reproduction.

Among its provisions, the bill requires schools to teach “that sex is determined by biology and reproductive function at birth; that biological males impregnate biological females by fertilizing the female egg with male sperm; that the female then raises the offspring; and that these reproductive roles are binary, stable, and unchanging.”
