Dua Lipa's public support has given an international dimension to the protests against the tourist project near the Narta lagoon. The debate is no longer limited to environmental protection, but affects the way decisions are made about the development, transparency and future of the Albanian coast...
Dua Lipa has decided to publicly support protests against environmental protection changes in the Narta area, giving international resonance to a debate that has dominated public life in Albania for weeks.
Through her podcast Service95 Book Club, during a conversation with Albanian writer Lea Ypi, the singer focused not only on the country's political history, but also on recent developments related to tourism projects on the coast.
The artist of Albanian origin described the fact that a government could change environmental protection legislation without a broad consultation process with citizens as worrying. She also praised the insistence of the protesters, who have been demanding the suspension of the project and the preservation of the natural area for weeks.
For the organizers of the protests, Dua Lipa's statement has a special significance. They believe that the attention the artist enjoys around the world can help ensure that the debate about Narta does not remain an internal Albanian issue, but is also followed by international opinion.
At the center of the controversy is the tourism project linked to Affinity Partners, the investment fund run by Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump's husband and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
The project envisages the development of a luxury tourist complex on the island of Sazan and in the area near the Narta lagoon, with investments estimated in billions of euros. According to Ivanka Trump, the idea for the investment was born after a private boat trip along the Albanian coast, where the family was impressed by the untouched beaches and natural landscape.
These characteristics are precisely the reason why many citizens oppose the project, arguing that development should not violate one of the country's most important ecosystems.
The Narta Lagoon is an area of special ecological importance. It includes wetlands, sand dunes, forests and salt marshes that serve as a refuge for hundreds of bird species. Flamingos, pelicans and herons have become a symbol of this landscape and, at the same time, a symbol of civic protest.
At rallies held in Tirana and the Narta area, protesters hold cardboard, sponge or plastic flamingos, turning them into a metaphor for nature protection. According to them, the concern is not only related to the construction of a luxury resort, but to the way protected areas are being treated and the precedents that could be created for the future.
Protestat nisën në fund të muajit maj, pasi në zonë u panë mjete të rënda dhe rrethime. Pamjet krijuan bindjen se punimet po avanconin ndërkohë që ende kishte pikëpyetje mbi aspektet mjedisore dhe procedurat ligjore.
Që prej asaj kohe demonstratat janë zhvilluar pothuajse çdo mbrëmje, me sloganet “Shqipëria nuk është në shitje”, “Mos prekni Nartën” dhe “Nuk duam të bëhemi Dubai”. Kryeministri Edi Rama e ka mbrojtur vazhdimisht projektin, duke argumentuar se Shqipëria ka nevojë për investime të mëdha dhe për një model turizmi me vlerë të shtuar.
Sipas tij, vendi nuk mund të mbështetet vetëm te turizmi sezonal dhe duhet të tërheqë kapital ndërkombëtar për të krijuar vende pune, infrastrukturë moderne dhe zhvillim ekonomik. Në këtë pikë qëndron edhe përplasja kryesore.
Qeveria e konsideron projektin një mundësi zhvillimi, ndërsa kundërshtarët e tij argumentojnë se problemi nuk është investimi në vetvete, por mënyra se si merren vendimet dhe shkalla e mbrojtjes që i garantohet pasurisë natyrore.
Dua Lipa nuk është shprehur kundër turizmit apo investimeve të huaja. Ajo ka ngritur shqetësimin për procedurat dhe për rëndësinë e konsultimit publik, duke theksuar se mbrojtja e mjedisit nuk duhet të ndryshohet pa përfshirjen e qytetarëve.
Ambientalistët paralajmërojnë se ndikimi i një projekti të tillë nuk kufizohet vetëm te sipërfaqja ku do të ndërtohen objektet. Ata argumentojnë se rrugët, trafiku, ndriçimi, zhurmat, konsumi i ujit dhe fragmentimi i dunave mund të ndryshojnë ekuilibrin e gjithë ekosistemit të lagunës.
Një tjetër element që ka ushqyer debatin lidhet me çështjet e pronësisë. Prokuroria e Posaçme kundër Korrupsionit dhe Krimit të Organizuar (SPAK) ka nisur hetime për disa transaksione të lidhura me tokat ku parashikohen investimet. Në qendër të verifikimeve është sipërmarrësi shqiptaro-amerikan Artur Shehu, i cili ka mohuar çdo shkelje.
Deri tani nuk ka akuza ndaj Jared Kushner apo Ivanka Trump, dhe hetimet nuk u atribuojnë atyre përgjegjësi penale. Megjithatë, fakti që projekti lidhet me familjen e presidentit amerikan e ka bërë debatin edhe më të ndjeshëm politikisht.
Për shumë protestues, çështja nuk është vetëm një projekt turistik, por mënyra se si ndërthuren interesat ekonomike, politika dhe administrimi i territorit. Ata kërkojnë më shumë transparencë, konsultim publik dhe respektim të procedurave ligjore.
Ndërkohë, protesta ka marrë një karakter më të gjerë. Krahas mbrojtjes së Nartës dhe Sazanit, në tubime diskutohen edhe korrupsioni, emigrimi, kostoja e jetesës, pagat, shërbimet publike dhe përqendrimi i pushtetit. Për një pjesë të pjesëmarrësve, projekti është kthyer në simbol të mënyrës se si qeveriset vendi.
Një element i veçantë i kësaj lëvizjeje është fakti se ajo nuk identifikohet me partitë tradicionale politike. Në protesta marrin pjesë artistë, ambientalistë, guida turistike, pensionistë, studentë dhe familje të tëra. Flamingot rozë janë bërë pika e përbashkët që bashkon breza dhe grupe të ndryshme shoqërore.
The question the protesters are asking is straightforward: who decides the future of the Albanian territory? Should development be driven solely by investment, or should citizens have a real role in decision-making?
On the other hand, the government remains convinced that the investment will continue. Rama considers the project part of the strategy for the country's economic transformation and argues that Albania must compete with elite Mediterranean destinations.
The issue has also attracted the attention of the European Union. As a candidate country for membership, Albania is expected to respect standards for environmental protection, administrative transparency and public participation in decision-making. For this reason, developments in Nartë are also being followed with interest by European institutions.
In this context, Dua Lipa's intervention has taken on a special weight. She did not become an organizer of protests and did not take on a political role, but used her global platform to draw attention to a debate that risked remaining local.
For years, the singer has been considered one of the figures who has promoted Albania's positive image in the world. This time, she has chosen to use that same influence to demand that economic development be accompanied by transparency, respect for the law, and environmental protection.
The flamingo, which until yesterday was simply a characteristic bird of the Narta lagoon, has thus become a symbol of a much broader debate. For some, it represents the protection of nature; for others, the need for a more balanced development model.

Ajo ndryshe nga shume të tjerë që rrinë të fshehur, pa berë të njëjtën gjë,siç po duket shanci i fundit për Shqipërinë. Mbështetja e saj eshte sfida ndaj 4 miljon euro të hedhura minimalisht për propagandë.. dhe Dua Lipa për mua është një patriote, që meriton të quhet një bijë e shquar e kombit tonë shqiptar.!
