Started as a reaction against the project in Zvërnec, the protest has entered its 17th day without showing any signs of fatigue. As Edi Rama attacks it every day and Sali Berisha tries to get closer to it, the movement continues to articulate an open rejection of the entire political class, becoming the biggest concern of the caste that has dominated the Albanian transition.
When citizens first took to the streets to oppose the project in Zvërnec, few thought the protest would survive more than a few days. In Albania, we are used to revolts that erupt violently and die down quickly. But what is happening in front of the Prime Minister's Office has begun to break this rule.
Today the protest entered its 17th day. For 17 days in a row, citizens have gathered in front of the Prime Minister's Office, marched in the streets of Tirana, given speeches, brought students, professors, activists, professionals and representatives of the diaspora. And above all, they have shown no sign of fatigue.
What started as a reaction against the project in Zvërnec has gradually transformed into something much bigger. The podium is no longer just about the coast or a specific investment. It is about immigration, corruption, the lack of meritocracy, state capture, education, healthcare and the crisis of political representation.
This is why the protest has begun to worry politics.
Edi Rama has not ignored it for a single day. On the contrary. The Prime Minister has reacted repeatedly, attacking the protesters and attempting to present them as manipulated groups or instigated by certain interests. Only in recent days has he spoken of "bullies", "two-legged jackals" and "fascist spirit", indicating that the protest has entered the government's radar much more than is publicly acknowledged.
But if Rama attacks him, on the other hand Sali Berisha is trying to get closer to him.
In the early days, opposition figures viewed the movement with reservations. Today, the situation has changed. Berisha is trying to present the protest as a revolt against Edi Rama and his government. However, the terrain is giving him a completely different message.
Almost every evening at the protest, chants like "Rama in prison, Berisha in prison," "We have no opposition, we are the opposition," or "The end has come for you." These are slogans that show that some of the protesters are not seeking to replace one political party with another, but are expressing their rejection of the entire elite that has dominated the Albanian transition.
This is precisely where the uniqueness of this movement lies.
For the first time in many years, the government, the opposition, and the political system that has produced the rotations of power in Albania are being attacked simultaneously in the same square. This is why the protest is creating concern in all political camps.
Meanwhile, participation is not falling. On the contrary, new voices are rising to the podium every day. Students talking about leaving the country. Teachers denouncing the state of education. Professionals telling their stories. Albanians from the diaspora returning to join the protest. MEPs asking the European Union to carefully monitor what is happening in Albania.
After 17 days, the question is no longer whether the protest will last another day. The question is whether Albanian politics will continue to behave as if nothing is happening.
Because while Rama attacks it and Berisha tries to embrace it, the protest continues on its path. And so far, there is no sign that the citizens intend to stop. /Pamphlet
