The President of the Republic of Albania, Bajram Begaj, decreed today the law on Criminal Amnesty.

The draft law was approved by 110 votes in the Parliament in the plenary session of April 4, while there were also debates between the deputies. About 1100 convicts are expected to benefit from this draft law.

This law will immediately release 700 people from prison and reduce the sentence of 400 others. While the other 2700 will not be obliged to continue the probationary service.

Amnesty will cease the investigation of over 200 cases which include offenses with a maximum sentence of 2 years. The amnesty will not benefit persons sentenced to life imprisonment, persons who evade justice and those convicted by the Criminal Code of Criminal Procedure.

"The President of the Republic, Sh. TZ Bajram Begaj, signed today decree no. 139, dated 09.04.2024, "for the promulgation of law no. 33/2024 "On the granting of amnesty" , it is stated in the announcement of the Presidency.
