DP MP, Gazment Bardhi, has formalized the final merger with Sali Berisha's group. For the first time in two years, he held a press statement from the PD headquarters, shortly before the start of the parliamentary group meeting, called by him.
During his speech, he stated that the last two years were very difficult and brought great costs to the Democrats. But as he pointed out, today his group has finally joined that of the Reestablishment.
Bardhi declared that the union is strength and not weakness, and it paved the way for a rational mind. Bardhi revealed that after the merger, the two groups will sit down at the base and start organizing the party.
Gazment Bardhi's full speech:
34 years ago, the hope of a terrorized, isolated and poor country was turned beyond misery by the birth of the Democratic Party, as the most sublime expression of a people seeking freedom and democracy.
These last two years, we entered a path that brought mistrust, conflict, division among the Democrats. The prolongation of that situation called into question the very existence of the party. This situation between us, unprecedented in its kind, was happening while Albania lost every day a brick in the fragile foundations of democracy and pluralism.
The country did not have and does not have the luxury of losing the opposition, therefore for more than 1 year together with many colleagues within the parliamentary group we have made sincere efforts, sometimes even at personal cost, to restore hope to the democrats in the party own, to the Democratic Party.
Many wish things hadn't gone wrong between us Democrats, many others wish the merger had happened sooner. However, I am convinced that today, when the parliamentary group returns united to its home, this is a good day for the democrats, for the opposition, for Albania!
Dear Albanian citizens! Dear democrats!
Today we are much better than 1 year ago, but we are still not up to the expectations of the Albanians towards us. Today we really do not fight for existence like 1 or 2 years ago, but we still face an anti-democratic diversion, which is still very structured and diverse. I have absolute conviction and faith that we will succeed in overcoming the obstacles that are placed before us, working together here at headquarters, in the parliamentary group and in every Albanian neighborhood and family.
Unity is strength, not weakness. Union is the only way for a rational mind. The Democratic Party, with the act of unification, after a journey in the dark, returns the light to itself and must return hope to the Albanians. With this motive, we will be in every corner of Albania to give hope to young people, men and women who want to build a future here for themselves and their families.
No more disruption! No more conflict! We will work together to transform today's opposition into tomorrow's government. Every relationship should be built on this principle and any relationship should be welcomed. Let's talk about ideas, about principles, not about individuals.
