Democratic Party MP, Jorida Tabaku, has reacted to the increase in prices of basic food products, linking the situation to the lack of supportive policies for Albanian agriculture and farmers.
Through a video message published on Facebook, Tabaku stated that fruits, vegetables and agricultural products have become unaffordable for many citizens, especially pensioners and low-income families.
"The uncontrolled increase in prices has turned them into forbidden products for many Albanian families," she stressed, raising concern about the impact this has on citizens' daily lives.
According to her, the problem stems from the neglect of the agricultural sector, which represents about 16% of Gross Domestic Product, but which faces high taxes, the depreciation of the euro, and a lack of support from the state.
"Albanian products are no longer produced as before, while farmers are left to survive without any real help," she said.
Tabaku also provided figures for the increase in imports, stating that in 2021, 30 thousand tons of vegetables were imported, while currently this figure has reached 70 thousand tons. Also, according to her, fruit imports have increased from 60 thousand tons to 100 thousand tons.
The MP argued that this data shows a substitution of domestic production with imported goods, increasing foreign dependence and exerting pressure on market prices.
"The products that today go to citizens' tables come from abroad, because Albania is no longer producing," she declared, accusing the government of fiscal and economic policies that, according to her, have influenced this situation.
In conclusion, Tabaku emphasized that the agricultural sector needs minimal support to increase production and ensure more affordable prices for consumers.
"Albanian land produces. Albanian villages produce. But agriculture is in danger and this danger has already been transferred to the increase in prices on citizens' tables," the opposition lawmaker concluded.
