Oerd Bylykbashi states that the electoral system in Albania should be abolished, as it distorts the will of voters.
The Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party, who has been a constant negotiator with the Socialists on the Electoral Code, said that this type of system harms the opposition and small parties.
"This system must be abolished a second ago. It harms small parties, the opposition as a whole, and does not translate votes into a fair ratio. It is a fabrication to take and hold power, not necessarily by vote, but by cardboard violence," he said.
According to him, the majority system may also have problems, but the current one is more dangerous for democracy and real representation of citizens.
"Is Rama ready to change this? Let's sit down and discuss it. But we must agree: this system must be eliminated from the constitution and the electoral law," declared Bylykbashi.
He further stated that the European People's Party has accepted the opposition's request to send a fact-finding mission to Albania, following the local elections of May 11.
According to Bylykbashi, the EPP Secretary General, Dolors Montserrat, has expressed the concern of member parties about the electoral developments in Albania, also referring to the resolution adopted at the EPP Congress that raised doubts about the regularity of the process.
"The EPP Secretary General stated that 'we are concerned that those concerns raised in the resolution adopted for Albania have been confirmed,'" Bylykbashi stated on the Log show on News24.
He added that the EPP Political Assembly has approved the request for a fact-finding mission, which will be organized as soon as possible to closely analyze the electoral situation in the country.
"All of this will also depend on further developments here in Albania, including the complaints process, the denunciations we are making, as well as the final OSCE/ODIHR report," Bylykbashi emphasized.
" EPP Secretary General Dolors Montserrat said about Albania that "we are concerned that the concerns that were raised in the resolution adopted at the EPP congress regarding the elections in Albania were confirmed. Consequently, we will continue to follow the final report of the OSCE/ODIHR very carefully and we will stand by the democratic factors in Albania.
This statement also paved the way for our request for a fact-finding mission regarding the elections in Albania, which was accepted by the EPP Political Assembly. They will organize as soon as possible for this mission to come to Albania and gather facts regarding what they have written.
"The Secretary General said that we will also wait for the ODIHR report. So it will all depend on the developments here, the complaints process, the denunciations that we are making and the OSCE/ODIHR report," he said.
