Socialist Party MP Erion Braçe has raised concerns about the VAT system, emphasizing that the way it is currently being implemented is favoring imports and harming domestic production.
In the Economy Committee, Braçe stated that many processors are choosing to buy agricultural products outside Albania, as this is more financially advantageous than buying from local producers.
According to Braçe, the situation has reached the point where some companies are importing carrots from Turkey, as the total cost, including transportation, customs and VAT, is lower than buying in Divjaka.
"Regulate the VAT for me as a collector. The VAT regulates me. Because I have no interest in buying domestically. You understand that there are processors who are going to get the carrots, not in Divjaka, but in Turkey, because it is cheaper than in Divjaka. Do you understand this? Together with the internal transport, together with the customs paid, together with the VAT paid at Customs. All together, it is cheaper than buying the carrots in Divjaka. So they are two completely different things, which should not be confused, because this confusion in the span of five years, in the span of five years, has brought this wealth that we have today.
It's that simple, and I would beg you to explain this to your leaders. Please listen to us, directors, when you explain this to your leaders. I would beg you not to confuse the compensation with the rate of Value Added Tax on transactions within the country. Don't confuse them anymore! Because then it happens that you go to Shkodra, and the other person is brought there in front of you, and says: Why don't you do that? Okay? That's the problem," said Braçe.
